Why did this liquor application meet neighborhood resistance?
OVERSATURATED
Neighbors and City Planning both characterize this location as already
overconcentrated for liquor sales. There is a liquor outlet within
500' of the proposed store, 10 other liquor stores within a half-mile,
and 16 more liquor outlets within a mile. Thanks to Annette Boyer
for doing the research (see bottom of page).
Residents seek fewer liquor outlets in the area, not more.
AMENDMENTS
ARE FOREVER
If allowed, the proposed amendment to land use
at Willow Plaza "runs with the land" -- that is, the location
will now be permitted to sell liquor indefinitely. The permit becomes
part of the location's value and is extremely hard to remove. (The
owner must also have a state license to sell liquor, but these can
be purchased without public input.)
The type of liquor sold also becomes very hard to
control. The NWGNA has been trying for years to influence offerings
at certain liquor stores in the area, with little success.

Hi all,
For those of you who have been following this issue we have good news
which I just received from Ed Schreiner below. Thanks to all who put
work into this effort. I feel really fortunate to be working with such
a great group of neighbors in such a strong Neighborhood Association,
NWGNA. I want to thank those in the Willow Glen Neighborhood Association
who joined us in this effort.
I also have to compliment the assistance and support we received in
this endeavor from Ed Schreiner and Carol Hamilton at San Jose Planning
and the ongoing support of Councilmember Ken Yeager and his Assistant
Tony Felice. Without everyone's help we could not have changed the outcome.
I hope Mr. Mazied can find a suitable location
to pursue his dream of owning a small business and wish him luck in
his endeavors.
Harvey

Harvey-
I just wanted to inform you that Sath Mazied has withdrawn his PDA and
ABC Exception for the Liquor Store at 860 Willow Street. The item will
be taken off the agenda for the November 10th Director's Hearing and
Public Notices will not be sent out. Let me know if you have any further
questions about this.
